What makes an R&B beat

Rhythm and blues has changed shape many times, from soul and new jack swing to the moody, spacious R&B of today. What has stayed is the focus on the voice. An R&B beat is built so a singer can stretch notes, stack harmonies and whisper a line without fighting the track.

Modern R&B borrows freely: trap hi-hats, drill drums, afro percussion, synth pads. That is why an R&B beat can be anything from a slow ballad to an up-tempo club record, as long as the chords and the mood stay soft enough for the voice to lead.

The sound of an R&B beat

• Tempo: usually 60 to 100 BPM, with up-tempo exceptions.
• Chords: extended chords (sevenths, ninths) on keys, guitar or pads: the heart of the beat.
• Drums: soft kicks, rimshots or snaps, and hi-hats that swing rather than roll.
• Bass: a bass line that moves with the chords, from a round 808 to a bass that sounds played.
• Space: fewer layers than a rap beat, so the voice and its harmonies have room.
