Hoodtrap beats

The hoodtrap sound

Hoodtrap sits between trap and drill. It runs at a drill tempo, roughly 145 to 150 BPM, but the drums bounce more like trap, and the melodies are dark and simple enough to sing over as easily as to rap on. The 808 carries a lot of the melody, so the beat stays full even when the rest drops out.

It is the sound people look for when they search for a Nemzzz or Kidwild type beat: melodic, moody and still hard. If your voice sits between singing and rapping, this is the tempo and the space it wants.

Writing to a hoodtrap beat

• Count it in half time. At 146 BPM the groove feels like 73, which gives a melodic flow room to breathe.
• Let the hook carry the song. Hoodtrap lives on a hook people can sing back, so write that first and build the verses around it.
• Leave the low end to the 808. A vocal that sits in the mids cuts through without fighting the bass.
• Autotune is at home here. The minor keys in these beats work well with a light tune on the vocal.

Picking the right beat

Play each beat and hum over it before you buy. The one where a melody comes without effort is usually the one. Check the key: if you already have a hook written, the beat in the same key, or its relative major, will fit it without transposing.
